Osher Lifelong Learning Institute presents Expanding Your Memoir and Fiction with Memorable Characters.
Due to another event at the Center, parking is not available in the JCC’s parking lot. Please park on the street or in a nearby parking structure.
Crafting vivid, colorful characters, who will live in readers' imaginations long after a story is experienced, is the heart and soul of good writing. Learn how you can build memorable characters from the ground up in this unique course, designed for beginners as well as experienced writers.
Through various writing exercises and short readings, diverse aspects of characters are examined. Learn to develop many of the physical and psychological aspects that help make a character jump off the page and come alive.
Students develop an ability to understand how a character thinks, what motivates their actions, and how their personalities are expressed on the written page. Course work includes developing a character who can play a major role in a memoir, short story, or other work of fiction.
Daniel M. Jaffe, M.F.A., fiction writer and essayist; creative writing instructor, UCLA Extension. Mr. Jaffe's short fiction has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize and he has been a Book of the Year Award Finalist for /ForeWord Magazine/. Dan is a great instructor. He has taught many courses for UCSB Extension and has a wealth of experience in teaching writing.
Individuals interested in participating in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at UC Santa Barbara (OLLI) courses have two options. You can join as an Annual Passport Member and enjoy as many OLLI courses as you wish for an entire year for only $145. This can work out to be less than $20 per course. Annual members also receive a number of other valuable membership benefits. If joining for an entire year is not the right option for you, you can join for just the one quarter and enjoy up to two different OLLI classes for only $50. This is the newly-launched Mini-Passport option.
