Event Description

Speaking of Stories hopes to promote the appreciation of literature through live theatrical readings and through educational programs, aimed particularly toward at risk youth in our community.

Speaking of Stories, through entertaining theatrical performances, provides South Coast residents with a rare opportunity to enjoy hearing fiction and non-fiction read aloud by stage and film actors.

The schedule for this series is as follows:

Speaking of Tobias Wolff
Monday March 31, 2008
featuring a reading by Tobias Wolff
We celebrate the writing of Tobias Wolff, one of our great contemporary masters of the short story, best known for his dazzling memoirs This Boy’s Life and In Pharaoh’s Army. We will be performing stories from his newest collection Our Story Begins, including Mr. Wolff reading Her Dog. Copies of Our Story Begins will be on sale at the event with Mr. Tobias available for book signing. Following the performance meet the author and all the performers at a post-show reception. Tickets for the reception are $20 (in addition to the performance ticket.)

Adventures On The Road
Monday April 28, 2008
featuring a reading by Emmy winner Jay Thomas
The celebration of cars and travel is an American pastime that offers reflections on our feelings about togetherness, escape, pride, obsession and family. These literary adventures include tales by Santa Barbara authors Susan Gulbransen & David Starkey.
This performance will run without intermission.

Beastly Fiction
Monday May 19, 2008
featuring a reading by Linda Purl
Linda Purl will headline our journey into the animal kingdom. Whether it’s man’s best friend or the call of the wild these fun and poignant stories will keep you on the edge of your seat. Santa Barbara authors will be represented by Saral Burdette & James Alexander.
